Grammar rule

The present simple

I / you / we / theyhe / she / it
I work in a bookstore. My brother works in a bookstore.
You live near the river. She lives near the river.
They ride bikes to school. He rides a bike to school.
One person or thing (he, she, it, Wanjiru, my dad, the shop) → -s. Two or more (they, my parents, the shops) → no -s.

When?

  • routines and habits: My dad runs every morning. We eat at seven.
  • facts (true all the time): Bees make honey.
  • time words: every day, every morning, on Saturdays, at night, in the afternoon

Spelling: he, she, it

  • most verbs: + s → sleeps, eats, sees
  • after s, sh, ch, x and o: + es → misses, brushes, teaches, mixes, does
  • a consonant + y: y → ies → try → tries, cry → cries
  • a vowel + y: + s → pay → pays, enjoy → enjoys

Three sounds

  • /s/ after p, t, k, f: sleeps, eats, walks
  • /z/ after other sounds: sees, rides, sells
  • /ɪz/, a new syllable, after s, z, sh, ch, x, ge: kisses, pushes, changes

Watch out

  • No is before the verb: She works here. (not She is work here)
  • The -s goes only with he, she and it: I work. (not I works)

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
