Imperatives for instructions and warnings: Please water the plants on Monday. Don't open the balcony door! Be careful. The student reads a note for a cat sitter, matches warnings with their reasons, and gives the teacher instructions for their own home.

Instructions and warnings

PositiveNegative
A verbSign here.Don't use your phone in class.
be + an adjectiveBe ready at nine.Don't be shy.
Polite: pleasePlease wait here. / Wait here, please. Please don't shout. / Don't shout, please.
  • The verb alone: no "you", no "to", no -s. Wait here. (not To wait here)
  • don't = do not. On signs: Do not enter.
  • Use: instructions (Sign here.), warnings (Don't drink that water!) and polite requests (Please wait here.).

Watch out

  • The negative is Don't + verb: Don't shout. (not No shout, Not shout, Don't to shout)
  • With an adjective (ready, careful, rude), use be: Be careful. Don't be rude. (not Don't rude)
  • To a stranger, a customer or your boss, an instruction without please can sound rude: say please, and use a friendly voice. Warnings (Be careful!) and friendly words (Don't worry!) are fine without it.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
