this and these for things near you, that and those for things far from you: This mirror is eight dollars. What are those? The student listens to a talk at a garage sale, sees why one mirror is "this" for the buyer and "that" for the seller, and then talks about the things in their own room for a sale.

Warm-up

A few questions about you before we start.

  1. What is in your hands right now?
  2. What is on the wall in your room?
  3. Old books, old clothes, old toys: where are your old things now?

Two or morethese clocksthose clocks
  • With a noun: This sofa is new. Those curtains are old.
  • Alone: What's this? — It's a ticket. What are those? — They're cats.
  • this and that + is · these and those + are: These lemons are cheap.
  • In answers, this and that become it, and these and those become they: Is that your seat? — Yes, it is. Are those your boxes? — No, they aren't.
  • It depends on the speaker: a pen in my hand is this pen for me and that pen for you.

Watch out

  • One thing: this, that. Two or more: these, those. Not this lemons, not that curtains.
  • this (a short i, like "kiss") and these (a long ee, like "please") sound different.
  • That's = that is. This is has no short form: This is my sister. (not This's)
