Grammar rule

Reporting what people think

In news and science writing, we often report what people think or say without saying exactly who. Use a passive reporting verb such as believe, think, say, know, expect or estimate.

PatternExample
It + is / was + said / thought… + that + clauseIt is thought that the fire started in the kitchen.
subject + is / was + said / thought… + to + verbThe singer is said to be very shy in real life.
subject + is / was + said / thought… + to have + past participleThe thieves are believed to have escaped by boat.
Use to have + past participle for something that happened earlier: He is thought to have left the country (= people think that he left). The unit's grammar lesson practices these patterns fully.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
