Warm-up

Let's talk about health care.

  1. Is it easy to see a doctor or a dentist where you live? How long do you usually wait?
  2. Would you ever travel to another country for an operation? Why, or why not?
  3. What services do you usually pay someone else to do for you?

Grammar rule

The causative: have and get

have / get + something + past participle

We use it when someone else does a job for us, usually because we pay or ask them:

  • She had her watch repaired last week. (A jeweler repaired it.)
  • We're getting our kitchen painted. (Painters are doing it.)
  • Where do you get your hair cut?

Use any tense of have or get: I have my teeth cleaned twice a year. I'm having my windows washed tomorrow. I've just had my eyes tested.

have + someone + base verb · get + someone + to + verb

I had the mechanic check the brakes. · I got my sister to lend me her car. (get someone to do often means you had to persuade them)

The same pattern also describes bad things that happen to us: He had his wallet stolen on the subway.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
