Warm-up

Let's talk about work.

  1. What did you want to be when you were a child?
  2. What is more important in a job: money or happiness?
  3. Do you know anyone who has a really unusual job?

Grammar rule

The second conditional

If + past simple, would + verb

We use it for imaginary or unlikely situations, now or in the future:

  • If I had more time, I would learn to cook. (I don't have time.)
  • If you could do any job, what would you do?
  • I wouldn't work if I won the lottery.

were for everyone

In careful English, we use were for all people: If I were you, I'd ask for a raise. In conversation, many people say If I was…

First or second?

  • If I get the job, I'll move to Denver. (It's possible.)
  • If I got the job, I'd move to Denver. (I don't really think I'll get it.)

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
