Warm-up

  1. If you got a job offer in another country, would you take it? Why, or why not?
  2. Have you seen any news this week that you were not sure was true?
  3. When did you last tell someone what a doctor or a teacher had told you?

Grammar rule

Grammar from units 10–12

UnitGrammarExample
10second conditional: if + past, would + verbIf I stayed, I would always wonder.
11reported statements and instructions: say, tell, tell someone toShe told me (that) there would always be a job for me. She told me not to worry.
12reported questions and requests: ask if / wh- + statement order, ask someone toShe asked if I was sure. They asked me to stay.
In reported speech, the tense usually moves back (am → was, will → would). In a reported question, use statement order: She asked where I lived, not where did I live.
