Why small goals work better than big dreams: what makes a good goal, three people's goals for the year, and a friend who is going to learn to swim at forty. Ten words for goals and plans, be going to for plans (I'm going to run a 5K), and an English goal for next month made together with your teacher.

Free, no card needed. The PDF has every slide, the homework and an answer key.

Warm-up

Let's talk about plans.

  1. Why are you learning English?
  2. Do you make plans for the new year?
  3. What is something you want to learn one day?

Grammar rule

be going to

Plans: be going to + verb

We use be going to for plans: things we decided to do before we speak.

Example
PositiveI'm going to run a race. She's going to learn to swim.
NegativeI'm not going to buy coffee. They aren't going to come.
QuestionAre you going to take the test? Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
Wh- questionWhen is she going to start?
Use am, is or are, and the base form of the verb: not I going to run, not She is going to runs.
In fast speech, going to often sounds like "gonna". You can say it, but don't write it.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
