A review of unit 2: needn't have and didn't need to, must have and can't have, I wish I had done, I wish you would, and reporting verbs, met again in a neighbor's post about a sweater that disappeared from the laundry room. The student chooses between the five points, fixes one mistake with each, and tells the story of a mix-up of their own.

Free, no card needed. The PDF has every slide, the homework and an answer key.

Warm-up

Before we look back at unit 2:

  1. Do you share anything with your neighbors, like a laundry room, a yard or a parking lot?
  2. Have you ever lent something to a neighbor and never gotten it back?
  3. Have you ever blamed someone for something and then found out that you were wrong?

LessonFormUseExample
6needn't have + past participle · didn't need to + verbwe did it, but it wasn't necessary · it wasn't necessary (usually we didn't do it)He needn't have shaved: the interview was by phone. · I didn't need to change trains, so the trip was easy.
7must / might / could / can't have + past participleguesses about the past, from evidenceThere's sand in his shoes. He must have been at the beach.
8wish / if only + past perfectregrets about the pastIf only I hadn't deleted those photos!
9wish + would / wouldn't + verbsomeone or something should changeI wish the kids next door wouldn't kick their ball into our yard.
10reporting verb + its patternwhat someone did when they spokeHe apologized for interrupting, and she agreed to wait.
Five things to watch: needn't have only for something that really happened; could have or might have for a guess, never can have; had + past participle for a regret about the past (I wish I had gone, not I wish I went); no would in a wish about yourself or about a state (I wish I could, I wish it were); suggest that + base verb or suggest + -ing, and deny / admit + -ing.
