Grammar rule

my, your, his, her, its, our, their

PersonWordExample
ImyMy car is old.
youyourYour bag is open!
hehisDad is in his room.
sheherMom is at her desk.
ititsThe cat is in its bed.
weourOur house is small.
theytheirTheir car is blue.

his or her? Look at the owner

his = the owner is a man or a boy. her = the owner is a woman or a girl. The thing after it doesn't matter: Dad and his sister, Mom and her brother.

Before a noun

The word goes before a noun, with no the: my car (not the my car). It is the same for one thing or more: their kid, their kids (not theirs kids).

Watch out: same sound, different word

  • its = of it: The cat is in its bed. · it's = it is: It's late.
  • your = of you: Your bag is open. · you're = you are: You're early!
  • their = of them: Their car is blue. · they're = they are: They're at work. (there, for a place, sounds the same too.)

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
