Grammar rule

Grammar from units 10–12

UnitGrammarExample
10causatives: have / get something done, have someone do, get someone to do, make / let someone doShe had the cast put on right away. The doctor had me move my fingers. I got a friend to drive me home.
11participle clauses: -ing, past participle, having + past participleTrying to show my nephew, I fell off. Having waited only twenty minutes, I was seen by a doctor.
12passive reporting: It is said that…, is thought to…, is thought to have…The bone is expected to heal in about six weeks.
Three things to watch: have, make and let take no to (had me move, made me pay, let us stay), but get does (got her to drive); a participle clause needs the same subject as the main clause; and after is said or is thought, use to have + past participle for the past (is said to have left).
