A review of units 4–6: the words for mysteries, regrets and social media storms, met again in the story of a fake UFO video and a neighbor's message about a package left at the wrong house, and the grammar of the three units together: must have, might have and can't have; wish, if only, I'd rather and it's time; and reporting verbs with their patterns.

Warm-up

Before we look back at the last three units:

  1. Have you seen or heard anything strange lately that you couldn't explain?
  2. What is one thing you wish you could change about your daily routine?
  3. When was the last time someone gave you advice that you didn't ask for?

Grammar rule

Grammar from units 4–6

UnitGrammarExample
4guessing about the past: must have, might / may / could have, can't / couldn't have + past participleThe driver must have read the number wrong. It might have been damaged.
5wish / if only + past simple, past perfect or would; I'd rather and it's time + past simpleI wish they would check the address. If only I had seen the driver! It's time somebody cut them back.
6reporting verbs and their patternsShe apologized for the mistake, promised to talk to the driver and suggested putting a bigger number on the door.
Three things to watch: have + past participle after must, might and can't (must have gone, not must have went); no would in a wish about yourself (I wish I could, I wish I had); and suggest + -ing or suggest that, never suggest someone to.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
