Warm-up

Let's talk about strange messages.

  1. Have you ever received a strange message or phone call asking for money or information?
  2. What do you do with emails from people you don't know?
  3. Do you know anyone who was tricked by a scam?

Grammar rule

should have / shouldn't have

should have / shouldn't have + past participle

We use it to talk about mistakes in the past, and often to show regret or to criticize:

  • I should have checked the website. (I didn't check it. That was a mistake.)
  • I shouldn't have clicked the link. (I clicked it. That was a mistake.)
  • You should have told me! (You didn't tell me, and I'm not happy about it.)

Now or the past?

  • Advice about now or the future: should + verb. You should call your bank.
  • A past mistake: should have + past participle. You should have called your bank.
Not should of: it sounds like "should-uv", but we write should have, or should've.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
