Why gyms are full in January and quiet in February, why we give up, how long a new habit takes, and what really helps; then a trainer shows a new member around the gym. Ten words for exercise, verb + to and verb + -ing (decide to join, enjoy swimming), and a fitness plan of your own.

Free, no card needed. The PDF has every slide, the homework and an answer key.

Warm-up

Let's talk about exercise.

  1. How did you stay active when you were a child?
  2. Is it easy or hard for you to find time for exercise?
  3. Have you ever had a gym membership?

Grammar rule

Verb + to, verb + -ing

verb + to + verb

want, would like, need, decide, plan, hope, promise, try, learn, forget: I want to get in shape. She decided to buy new running shoes.

verb + verb with -ing

enjoy, finish, stop, keep, practice, suggest, don't mind: I enjoy swimming. He stopped going to the gym.

both are fine

like, love, hate, start: I like running. / I like to run. She started going to yoga. / She started to go to yoga.

would like takes to: I'd like to try yoga (not I'd like trying). For activities, use go + -ing: go swimming, go running.
Careful: stop, try and forget can also take the other form, but then the meaning changes. He stopped to drink water = he stopped running because he wanted a drink.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
