How be works

Positive

Long formShort form
II am tired.I'm tired.
he / she / itShe is happy. She's happy.
you / we / theyWe are hungry. We're hungry.

One person or thing (he, she, it) → is: Carla is happy. The beach is beautiful. Two or more (we, they) → are: Carla and I are at a hotel.

Negative: be + not

Long formShort form
II am not cold.I'm not cold.
he / she / itIt is not cold.It isn't cold.
you / we / theyWe are not at home.We aren't at home.
For I, the short form is I'm not. Don't say I amn't.

We use be for…

  • names and countries: I'm Pedro. She's from Brazil. She's Brazilian.
  • feelings: I'm tired. We're hungry.
  • places: We're in a café. They aren't at home.
  • the weather: It's hot. It isn't cold.

Teach it live with video and a whiteboard, or print it: the PDF has every slide, the homework and the answers.
